MagStud Pro Support

Help, troubleshooting, and contact information for MagStud Pro (v1.3).

Getting Started

Open MagStud Pro and begin with the Sweep tab. Hold the phone flat against the wall and slide it slowly along the surface. Tap Calibrate first if you are in a high-metal environment (near a fridge, breaker panel, or vehicle).

Permissions

Motion and magnetometer access support sensing. Camera, photos, and microphone are optional — only used if you attach a photo or voice memo to a journal entry. All sensor data stays on your device.

Common Questions

The gauge barely moves. What's wrong?
Calibrate first — tap the Calibrate button in the Sweep tab or Settings while the phone is held away from metal. This sets the ambient baseline so changes near a wall register clearly.

The AC Detector always shows Energized.
Lower the AC power threshold slider on the AC tab. A strong ambient hum from nearby appliances can lift the baseline. Try moving away from the fridge or microwave before scanning.

How do I export a PDF of my scan?
Go to the Journal tab, open any saved session, and tap "Export PDF Report." The iOS share sheet will open so you can save to Files, print, or share via AirDrop.

What is Stud Sketch?
Stud Sketch (in the Pro tab) lets you mark stud positions as you sweep, then shows a scale wall diagram with each stud's position in inches from the wall's left edge and the gap between adjacent studs. Tap Render then Share to export the diagram as a PNG. It is the document to hand a contractor or reference while drilling.

How accurate is the inch position in Stud Sketch?
Accuracy depends on the "Inches per radian" calibration slider. The default of 36 inches per radian fits a typical phone-at-arm-length sweep. If you know the distance between two studs you already found, adjust the slider until the diagram matches and all subsequent marks will scale correctly.

How do I export the Wall Heatmap?
In the Heatmap tab, scan the wall until the grid is painted, then tap Save Map. Once rendered, a Share PNG button appears — tap it to share via AirDrop, save to Photos, or send anywhere.

What is the Framing Reference?
It's an offline guide to US wall framing standards (IRC 2024), lumber actual dimensions, and joist spacings — found in the Pro tab. It also includes a Stud Spacing Calculator: enter two stud positions and wall width to project where every stud should be.

Does the app require an account?
No. MagStud Pro is fully offline and requires no account, subscription, or network connection.

Where is my data stored?
All scan sessions, photos, and voice memos are stored on your device. Exporting via the share sheet is the only way data leaves the app, and that is entirely under your control.

How do I remove the app?
Delete the app from your device. iOS removes all app data, including scan sessions and voice memos, when the app is deleted.

Is MagStud Pro safe to rely on before drilling?
MagStud Pro is a sensing aid, not a replacement for a contact voltage tester. Always verify with a proper electrical safety tool and follow appropriate trade practices before drilling into any wall.
